Banalidad

Lorca play by Albee.

This is why I didn't write about Lorca in America theater, sticking to poetry.

Banality is fundamental to theater. The obvious exceptions make the banality of naturalistic drama even more patent. Albee and Lorca were in different lines of work, though Albee evidently doesn't recognize it.

I don't actually regard this as a fatal defect. But I think the basic effects require the words coming out of the player's mouth to be slightly less interesting than they might be.

I think the Albee of Zoo Story is something else entirely though. The line of Albee that comes out of Pinter and Beckett, which is also evident in the best of Mamet. I think there is something there, some there there. The language is sharper than when Albee has Lorca say: "you don't know what it is to be me, to be so special" Jesus fucking Christ.
